The art of piano tuning

Because piano tuning involves working with vibrating musical strings, much of it can be analyzed and described in scientific terms. This does not, however, mean that piano tuning is nothing more than an applied science. Science lays the foundations for the necessary technique, but like the artist or sculptor, the artist tuner uses technique as a tool to achieve something more than technique alone can achieve.

The tone of a piano is immensely complex, and the final polish on the tone of any instrument - the final character of the piano - is given by the tuner, through the art of tuning. This is not something that happens by chance. It happens as a natural result of years of experience and intimate practical knowledge of the inner acoustical world of piano tone.
