MYTH :

The use of Equal Temperament means that all pianos, tuned theoretically perfectly, are all tuned the same.

There is no such thing as theoretical perfection in tuning (except in traditional theory, which is oversimplified and based on incorrect premises). Tuning is indeed a precise science and a precise art, but its theoretical side is still much closer to what is now called 'fuzzy logic', than it is to pure logic. Up to a point it is either 'correct' or 'incorrect', but fine tuning involves going well beyond this point.

Most tunings in Equal Temperament are the same in some respects, just like most human faces are the same in some respects. Piano tuning is not like the mere placing of the nose and mouth on a face, to prescribed positions. Piano tuning does involve the equivalent of this, but this is only the beginning of the art, as it would be for any artist drawing a face.

The application of equal temperament to any individual instrument, involves many kinds of judgment that are uniquely applied to that particular instrument.
