Should I let a young child 'play' the piano by hitting the keys?

Provided only hands are used, a modern piano in good condition cannot normally be damaged internally in this way, even though it may sound alarming. An older instrument should be treated more carefully, as it may have worn, damaged, weakened or brittle action parts.

The keys should never be pushed sideways, used as a roadway for toy vehicles, or hit with something other than the hand.
