Composer: John Sheppard c.1515 - c.1560

The transcription of these pieces for viols is not to be considered 'inauthentic'. Iluustrissima Omnium appears also in lute tablature (for lute of D), indicating that the piece was perhaps more widely known or more popular than the few extant concordances would have us believe. These motets make excellent short concert pieces with a most sumptuous texture, and they fully display John Sheppard's genius in polyphonic harmony.
The edition includes a
score, separate part sheets, and lute tablature transcribed for a lute
in G. The Latin text from the source is included, together with a translation
by Dr Cedric Littlewood (University of Oxford).
