Exotic Spheres
(Physical) Strikingly colorful or unusual spheres of precious or semi-precious stone.
(Mathematical) Higher dimensional objects called hyperspheres, with more than one smooth structure. The existence of exotic spheres was proved by Milnor, who in 1956 showed the seven-dimensional hypersphere to be exotic.
(Philosophical) Elevated spheres of experience or consciousness.
(Musical) Here, a set of eight tracks for one or two viols da gamba, illustrating the colorful and unusual sounds and moods that the instruments are capable of producing. The first is the Ouverture from La Dubois by Sainte Colombe (d. ca. 1695), one of the great masters of the French baroque style of playing, whose music has been featured in Alain Corneau's film Tout les matins du monde. The contemporary Sapere Aude, Water and Exotic Spheres are complete pieces from New Music for French Viols (ISMN M 708006 77 0). Exotic Spheres, played entirely on natural harmonics, originally appeared as Air. The tracks Earth, The World Is All and Canon are shorter extracts. The Canon (from Quinque Viae) in imitation of the renaissance style and sound, is in two halves, the second half being an inversion of the first. The Tetrad is from ISMN M 708006 14 5.
