Music for Two Lyra Viols from Jacobean England
played by members of The Alchemy Ensemble, Brian Capleton and Angela Cranmore
Artist's Comments (by Brian Capleton): "The pieces range from the magnificent Pavans and Dulce Auditum, which are as rich as consort music, through upbeat dance pieces, to outright humorous pieces. The performance practice that this music demands is very far removed from that of later genres such as the high baroque or the Romantic style of the 19th century. This recording captures the 'lyra viol' spirit of these pieces in all their different moods, using small, high tension, lively instruments which are in keeping with performance practice for viols played 'the lyra way'." |
